Nicholas "Nick" Schrenk was born in Washington, D.C. and grew up in Northern Virginia. He currently resides in Virginia's scenic Shenandoah Valley with his wife and their three cats. In 1983, Nick graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Commonwealth University, where he received a BFA in Communication Arts and Design and was inducted into the honor society of Phi Kappa Phi. After college, he launched a career as a freelance illustrator and graphic designer.  In 1989, after working exclusively as a commercial artist, Nick devoted himself to the study of oil painting. He moved to New Hampshire and began private studies with the painters Richard W. Whitney and Sid Willis. Both artists emphasized the importance of capturing the visual impression through the careful observation of form, value, edges and color. While living in New England, Nick developed a fondness for the Great Masters, especially

Velázquez and Vermeer, as well as a profound appreciation for the Impressionists, both European and American. Since moving back to Virginia, Nick has attended several workshops taught by the painters Romel de la Torre, John Budicin and Ken Backhaus, among others.
